New Delhi: According to the most recent NCRB or National Crime Records Bureau data, Delhi experienced a more than 40% increase in crimes against women in 2021 compared to 2020, with two girls being raped in the capital city every day last year, making it the most unsafe metropolitan area for women in India.
In 2021, Delhi reported 13,892 cases of crimes against women, up from 9,782 cases in 2020, according to the data.
Delhi topped the list of crimes against women across all major cities for the third year in a row. With 1,226 rapes and 136 dowry deaths, crimes against women increased by 40% in 2021 compared to the previous year.
Bengaluru came in second with 3,127 cases, followed by Mumbai with 5,543 incidents of crimes against women. Together, these two major cities account for 12.76 and 7.2% of all crimes committed in the 19 cities.
The number of crimes committed against seniors and children in the city was likewise the highest in the nation.
With 4,674 reported cases of domestic violence against women in 2021, Delhi also topped the list of major cities for this category of crimes against women.
The majority of rape and assault cases involving women, according to senior police officers, are committed by people the victims know and cannot be directly stopped by the police.
“Around 95% of the crimes against women are carried out by their relatives and hence do not amount to crimes related to law and order. The police are not in direct control of such incidents,” an officer said.
