Every year 5th of June is celebrated as the World Environment Day to show gratitude towards the nature and environment and also to spread awareness.
This beautiful day is celebrated to remind people about the importance of nature and to remind people to respect nature and give back to it as it gives us.
Obviously, people sitting inside their homes due to the lockdown has helped mother nature to heal a lot but this is something we should even keep in mind once we start stepping out again, because taking care of the environment is our responsibility.
2021 Theme
World Environment Day 2021’s theme is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ and Pakistan will be hosting this day globally. On this special day, we will also get to see the launch of UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
History
World Environment Day is one of the biggest annual events organised by the United Nations to raise awareness about the significance of nature. It was established by the UN assembly in 1972, on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the human environment.
Significance
The most important idea behind celebrating World Environment Day is to remind people that nature should not be taken for granted.
In UN’s thought, this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by communities, enterprises and individuals in preserving and enhancing the environment.
On this day, we should take a moment and pay attention to what all the nature has given us and thank it with all our heart with a promise that we will take care of it and protect it.
Our baby steps towards the welfare of the environment can save it from the disruption. For example, we can plant a tree, close water taps when we are not using it, save rainwater, do not litter, consider walking to a small distance rather than using a motor vehicle.
It is a give and take relationship where it is our responsibility to think about the health of our mother nature and keep it happy.
“What we are doing to the forests of the world is nothing but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and one another”- Mahatma Gandhi
